The Details
Guitarist Paulo Paguntalan approached me in early 2008 to design the packaging for his band, Copremesis‘ first full length album titled “Muay Thai Ladyboys.” The band already had artwork designed for them by the demented mind of Scott Porterfield and consists of a female Muay Thai boxer with an enormous slab of… well… you can see it for yourself, it’s pretty disgusting, outlandish and hilarious.
My job was to design the interior of the CD booklet, the traycard and the graphic on the compact disc following the perverse Thai-inspired theme. Paulo’s only request was that I place the text on the inside and outside of the traycard and emulate the Thai writing style using a unique font and write the text vertically from right to left.
For the interior of the CD booklet, I continued with the artwork’s theme and added photos of several transgendered Asians in various levels of undress. For the front of the CD I used a photograph which is too explicit to display here, but it did give those who bought the album a horrific surprise.
The combined packaging was so controversial that one music critic was so disgusted he sent the promotional copy of the album back to the band’s record label and refused to discuss it in their publication. That single horrified response easily makes this one of my all-time favorite design projects. It’s gross. It’s weird. It’s hilarious!
